10 tips from a professional wedding makeup artist

While there are some things you can leave right up until your wedding day, your beauty regime and makeup look shouldn’t be one of them!

Here are 10 tips from me to help you look and feel your best on your wedding day.

1. Book in a makeup trial

You really won’t regret it, I promise.

Not having a trial can go either way - yes, we might nail the look first-time on your wedding day, or there might be things you want to change that take up valuable, precious time and add stress to your wedding morning.

Eliminate some of the stress on your wedding day by trialing your look with your makeup artist and/or hair stylist first.

2. Don’t rely on the trends

You want your wedding photos to be timeless.

It’s not nice to look back and regret a look that aged too quickly.

Getting caught up in beauty trends will do this, so opt for a timeless look instead.

3. Invest in your skin routine

Start a skincare routine at least 6-8 months before your wedding - this isn’t something to introduce last minute!

Book yourself in for facials and get some professional advice on treatments that will best suit you.

4. Find a look you feel comfortable in

Just because it’s your wedding day, doesn’t mean you need to wear super heavy makeup - particularly if it isn’t your style.

Working out what you feel comfortable wearing will make a huge difference.

5. Waterproof all the way

Check with your makeup artist that products being used are waterproof/water resistant where possible, particularly for eye makeup.

This will help with the longevity and prevent smudging.

6. Pack beauty products with you

Your wedding day is a really long day!

It’s important that you feel your best through it all.

See my blog post here on my 5 recommended products to pack for your wedding day.

7. Moisturise your body

Dry elbows and cracked fake tan isn’t pretty!

Start moisturising every day at least one week before your wedding to ensure smooth, glowy skin.

Don’t forget those hands and nails either!

8. Be Realistic

Try and be realistic when it comes to finding inspiration photos for your look and your expectations with makeup and hair.

A lot of what you see online is edited and often styled by large teams of people over an entire day!

We have a short amount of time to prepare what is often a large number of people, so it’s helpful to be realistic about what can be achieved.

9. Opt for a long-wearing lipstick

You’ll be kissing everyone and sipping on champagne all day and all night.

Take out some stress out of maintaining your look by picking a lip product that is long wearing, like a matte lipstick or a liquid lipstick that sets.

10. Drink plenty of water

I am sure you are over hearing this from everyone in the beauty industry, but drinking water is so important for our skin!

Get more radiant, clear skin by increasing your water intake over the weeks leading up to your wedding.

It can all be a bit overwhelming, but hopefully those tips are helpful in getting you prepared!

All the best!
