10 Pro tips from a wedding makeup artist

While there are some things you can leave up until the last few minutes before your wedding day, your beauty regime and makeup look shouldn’t be one of them. Here are 10 tips from me - a pro wedding makeup artist from Wollongong, NSW - to help you look and feel your best on your wedding day!

  1. Book in a makeup trial

You really won’t regret it. Not having a trial can go either way, yes you might love it, but you also might not. Eliminate some of the stress on your wedding day by trialing the look with your makeup artist first.

  2. Don’t rely on the trends

You want your wedding photos to be timeless and not look back and regret a look that ages too quickly. Getting caught up in beauty trends will do this, opt for a timeless look instead.

  3. Invest in your skin routine

Start at least 6-8 months before your wedding, this step isn’t something to introduce last minute! Book yourself in for facials and get some professional advice on treatments that will best suit you.

  4. Find a look you feel comfortable in

Just because it’s your wedding day, doesn’t mean you need to wear super heavy makeup, particularly if it isn’t your style. Working out what you feel comfortable wearing will make a huge difference.

  5. Waterproof all the way

Check with your makeup artist that products being used are waterproof/water resistant where possible, particularly for eye makeup. This will help with the longevity and prevent smudging.

  6. Pack beauty products with you

It is a really long day and you will want to feel fresh through it all. See my blog post here on my 5 recommended products to pack for your wedding day that should cover you when you need.

  7. Moisturize your body

Dry elbows and cracked fake tan isn’t pretty. Start moisturising everyday a week before your wedding to ensure smooth, glowy skin. Don’t forget those hands and nails either.

  8. Opt for a long wearing lipstick

You’ll be kissing everyone and sipping on champagne through the night, take out some stress by picking a lip product that is more long wearing, like a matte lipstick or a liquid lipstick that sets.

  9. Drink plenty of water leading up to the day

I am sure you are over hearing this from everyone in the beauty industry, but drinking water is so important for our skin! Get more radiant, clear skin by increasing your water intake over the remainder weeks before your wedding.

  10. Be Realistic

Try and be realistic when it comes to finding makeup inspo photos and your expectations with makeup. Everything you see online is edited and filtered and unfortunately your makeup artist can’t transform you into Kim Kardashian. Inspo makeup pictures are just that, inspiration.
